Sara Masüger, born in 1978 in Baar (ZG), is a Swiss artist who lives and works in Zurich. She is known for her sculptures and large-scale installations, which often explore the nature and fragility of the human body, as well as memory and identity. Her artworks possess a surreal, almost dreamlike aesthetic. After studying Fine Art at the Bern University of the Arts, Masüger was an artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 2002 to 2003. She also worked as an assistant to Karin Sander at the Chair of Architecture and Art at ETH Zurich and held teaching posts at the Zurich University of the Arts. Masüger often approaches her installations from a spatial perspective, imagining how visitors enter and move through them, much like a choreography. A recurring theme in her works is the question of the formation and perception of memories, which she addresses in titles such as ‘Gedächtnislandschaften’ (Landscapes of Memory). Her works have been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, including the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur, the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, the Kunsthaus Zug, the Lokremise St. Gallen and the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art Zurich. In 2018, a permanent installation of hers entitled ‘Inn Reverse’ was on display at the Muzeum Susch.  Her works are also featured in prestigious public collections. The exhibition ‘Sara Masüger – Landscapes of Memory’ is currently on display at the Lokremise, part of the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, and runs until 2 November 2025.

Zwischenraum (Interstitial Space)
Sara Masüger’s installation Zwischenraum takes shape in an alleyway between two houses, in the noman’s land between two buildings. Thus circumscribed, it starts off as unoccupied, empty space. Masüger dives into this territory, measures it, delineates distances, marks the opening, and in this way fixes them, rendering them visible. The movable objects that she inserts into this territory become artifacts, which by virtue of their presence enlarge the space they occupy and transform it into a resonance body. Swaying in the wind, they give rise to audible entanglements. Visitors are summoned and invited in by the tinkling of brittle white porcelain. Masüger’s installation transforms this neglected, empty, but public, space into a stage defined by the walls flanking it.
