Balkon im Freien
Der Balkon des Ramses-III.-Tempels am Nilufer aus dem Jahr 1218 v. Chr. könnte eines der ältesten Bauwerke seiner Art sein. Ein Ort, von dem aus der Pharao sein Volk überblickt, ohne Gefahr zu laufen, bedrängt zu werden. Der Balkon hat sich im Laufe der Epochen und in unterschiedlichen Kulturen diversifiziert, seine ursprüngliche Funktion als Bühne für einen Auftritt jedoch nie verloren. Heute wird er als Ort der Entspannung und des Eintauchens in die Natur und Umwelt empfunden, ohne daran aktiv teilhaben zu müssen. In dieser Installation wird der Balkon durch Gletschervliese (Diavolezza) von der Hotelfassade isoliert, die organischen Spuren des Gletschers werden als Abdruck ersichtlich. Das Tourismushotel verschwindet hinter einem Vorhang, der den Schnee vor dem Schmelzen schützen soll. Auf dem Balkon erblickt man Katzen, bei denen man sich fragt, ob sie zum Haus «gehören».

Outdoor Balcony
Built in 1218 B.C., the balcony of the Temple of Ramsses III on the west bank of the Nile could well be the oldest known structure of its kind in the world. The balcony served the pharoah as a platform from which to survey his people without being jostled by them. The balcony has never lost its original function as a platform for public appearances, even if the most diverse cultures have since appropriated it for a wide range of purposes. Today, it is cherished most as a place in which to relax and enjoy the outdoor world without having to actively participate in it. By draping a glacier fleece bearing the organic imprint of the Diavolezza glacier over the hotel façade, this installation isolates the balcony from the rest of the building. The hotel itself thus disappears behind a curtain designed to preserve the glacier’s own blanket of snow. The cats that can be spotted on the balcony leave viewers wondering whether they «belong» to the establishment.

Ovaler Fensterblick auf Gletscher
Das erste Zelt wurde in Moldawien gefunden und stammt aus der Zeit um 40’000 v. Chr. Es zeugt von einer Nomadenkultur, in der Natur und menschliche Verletzlichkeit in ständigem Wechselspiel stehen. In diesem Ölbild, das in der Nische der Fassade des ehemaligen Heustalls des Dorfarztes von Pontresina hängt, liegt ein Körper in einem Zelt. Indes ist es nicht wie bei den Nomaden sein Zuhause, sondern eher ein zwischenzeitlicher Unterschlupf auf einer Wanderung. Das Zelt besteht jedoch nur aus Stangen, es hat keine Seitenwände. Der Körper ist gänzlich seiner Umwelt ausgesetzt und von dem über die Alpen fliegenden Militärjet und seinen Messgeräten leicht zu erfassen. Als Betrachtende blicken wir durch das Rundbogenfenster in den Talvo, um in eine künstliche Naturszenerie einzutauchen, in der die Wildnis und die Existenz des Menschen ineinanderfliessen.

An Oval Window onto the Glacier
The oldest tent known to humanity was found in Moldova and is believed to be over 40,000 years old. It attests to a nomadic culture defined by the constant interaction of human vulnerability and the natural world. This oil painting, which occupies a niche in the façade of what used to be the barn of Pontresina’s village doctor, shows a body lying in a tent. The tent, however, is clearly not a home; it is rather a temporary shelter providing refuge for a weary traveler. Significantly, it has no canvas but consists only of poles. The body lying inside it is thus exposed to the elements—and to the surveillance cameras and equipment on board military jets flying over the Swiss Alps. Viewers can thus peer through the arched window into the hayloft and by doing so immerse themselves in an artificial landscape in which wilderness and human existence interpenetrate.

Meer und Zaun
Ich glaubte immer ganz genau zu wissen, wo das Meer begann und das Land endete. Jede Karte suggerierte mir diese klare Linie, und als ich das Meer aus der Ferne sah, war sie auch da. Auf der einen Seite mein grosser trockener Garten, auf der anderen das Getöse der Wellen.
Zuerst betrachtete ich das Land, hier hatte ich gelernt zu leben und mir gefiel, wie klar alles darin zu sein schien, wie feine Linien die Dinge voneinander trennten und alles einen Namen hatte. Dann horchte ich dem Meer und mir war, als ob es dort nur Rauschen und keine Akkorde gäbe. Ich wollte meine Welt vor der drohenden Unordnung des Gegenübers bewahren, und als ich versuchte, der Linie entlang zu bauen, löste sich diese fortwährend auf. Weder der Wind noch die Wellen machten daran halt. Mal wurde der Sand nass und klebrig, mal lag das Meer von Wasser unbedeckt da.

Sea and Fence
I always thought I knew exactly where the sea began and where land ended. Every map seemed to show a clear dividing line, and that is also what I saw when I glimpsed the sea from far away. On one side there was my large, arid garden, and, on the other, the crashing breakers. At first, I saw the land I had learned to live on and love as a place where everything was clear, where there were fine lines separating one thing from another, and where everything had a name. Then I listened to the sea, and it was as if it had all been just noise and chaos. I wanted to shield my world against the chaos threatening it from without, and when I tried to build along the line, the line itself kept on dissolving. It was no match for either the wind or the waves. Sometimes the sand was wet and sticky, sometimes the sea was uncovered by water.

Zwischenraum
Sara Masügers Installation Zwischenraum entsteht in einer Gasse, zwischen zwei Häusern, in und aus dem Gebiet zwischen dem umbauten Raum. Definiert in dieser Begrenzung, ist das Dazwischen zunächst unbesetzt, eine Leerstelle. Masüger geht in diese hinein, sie vermisst das Gebiet, hält den Abstand fest, markiert die Öffnung, macht diese als solche sichtbar und fixiert sie. Die mobilen Objekte, die sie in diesen Zwischenraum einzieht, werden zu Artefakten in der Bewegung, in ihrer Präsenz erweitern sie den Zwischenraum zum Klangkörper. Die Objekte wiegen sich im Wind und daraus erwachsen klingende Verwicklungen. So rufen fragile, weisse Porzellanklänge die Besuchenden, laden sie ein. Mit ihrem Einbau im Zwischenraum verwandelt Masüger den abseitigen öffentlichen (Leer)-Raum zu einer Bühne – auch und gerade im Dazwischen.

Interstitial Space
Sara Masüger’s installation Zwischenraum takes shape in an alleyway between two houses, in the noman’s land between two buildings. Thus circumscribed, it starts off as unoccupied, empty space. Masüger dives into this territory, measures it, delineates distances, marks the opening, and in this way fixes them, rendering them visible. The movable objects that she inserts into this territory become artifacts, which by virtue of their presence enlarge the space they occupy and transform it into a resonance body. Swaying in the wind, they give rise to audible entanglements. Visitors are summoned and invited in by the tinkling of brittle white porcelain. Masüger’s installation transforms this neglected, empty, but public, space into a stage defined by the walls flanking it.

TIME NO LONGER –
Ein Schild mit dem Schriftzug „art.art art“ ragt aus der Häuserzeile in die Via Maistra und verweist auf Pontresina als Ort der Kunst, als Sprachfuge zwischen Welten. Mehrsprachig – rätoromanisch, englisch, französisch – erinnert es an Verbindendes, Grenzüberschreitendes, an Zusammenkommen und Austausch. Eine Kugel ergänzt das Schild – eine Erdkugel ohne Kontinente und Länder –, welche Grenzen auflöst und Lokales mit Globalem verbindet. TIME NO LONGER dreht sich im Wind, in eigenem Takt: vorwärts, rückwärts, schneller, langsamer, im Augenblick verweilend, frei von Uhr und Mass und ohne Richtungen zu geben. Seine Schatten wandern über Strasse und Mauern, erweitern das Kreisen und laden ein, Neues zu sehen und zu denken. Ein Innehalten und ein Lauschen auf das Fremde im Vertrauten wird möglich; die Arbeit wird zu einem gemeinsamen Jetzt, zu einem Ort, an dem Nähe und Weite sich begegnen.

TIME NO LONGER –
Projecting from the row of houses on the Via Maistra is an old shop sign bearing the flourish art art art. It is a pointer both to Pontresina as a place of art and to the power of language to connect different worlds. Presented in three languages—Romansh, English, and French—it reminds us of what we have in common, of the fellowship that transcends borders. Suspended below the sign is a globe; but it is a globe without continents or countries that dissolves borders and connects the local to the global. TIME NO LONGER turns in the wind following a rhythm of its own: turning forwards, backwards, fast and slow, every now and then pausing for a moment, independent of measured time and any need to point the way. Its shadows migrate across streets and up walls, broadening its domain and inviting visitors to see and think new things. Prompting us to contemplate the foreign in the familiar, the work becomes a shared present, a place where proximity and distance meet.

Le petit Tuor
Ausgangspunkt meiner Arbeit ist das Büchlein Aide-mémoire du sommelier von Conrad Tuor (1914–2000), erschienen 1949 (dt. Ausgabe: Handbuch für Serviceangestellte). Tuor, ein Grossonkel von mir, wuchs in Sumvitg in einer Bauernfamilie auf, arbeitete sich als Kellner in Grandhotels hoch und wurde schliesslich Lehrer an der renommierten Hotelfachschule EHL in Lausanne. Sein Handbuch, weithin als «le petit Tuor» bekannt, galt über Jahrzehnte als Regelwerk des professionellen Service. Ich stiess durch Zufall auf das Buch – und war sofort fasziniert. Die Genauigkeit und Sorgfalt, die es auszeichnen, erinnerten mich an die Frauen meiner Familie. In einer Performance vollzieht meine Tochter die im Buch enthaltenen Skizzen zur Anordnung von Gedecken nach. Das Video wird in einer Endlosschleife gezeigt und macht Überliefertes sichtbar – und verwandelt es zugleich in etwas Neues. Die Videoinstallation ist im Fenster der Chesa Planet zu sehen.

Le petit Tuor
The starting point for my work was a little book called Aide-mémoire du sommelier by Conrad Tuor (1914–2000) of 1949. Tuor was a great-uncle of mine who grew up on a farm in the village of Sumvitg in the mountains of Graubünden. He began his career as a waiter in a grand hotel and rose up through the ranks, eventually becoming a teacher at the famous EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne. For decades, le petit Tuor, which was published in English as The Wine and Food Handbook, was regarded as the Bible of all hospitality professionals. I came across it by chance, and was instantly transfixed. The exactitude and care Tuor invested in it reminded me of the women in my family, too. My daughter’s performance reconstructs the sketches of table settings contained in the book. The video, played in an endless loop, renders visible a particular aspect of our heritage, at the same time transforming it into something new. The video installation can be seen in the window of the Chesa Planet.

THE SILENT WHITE
Diese Glasskulptur mit Einschlüssen von Steinen, Sand und Pflanzenresten vom Piz Languard erinnert an ein Stück Permafrost. Im Dorfteil Laret platziert, wirkt sie, als habe sie sich vom Berg gelöst. Je nach Lichteinfall schimmert sie bläulich, grau oder in wechselnden Weisstönen. Sie lässt partiell tief hineinsehen und ermöglicht so einen Blick auf Verborgenes und auf vergangene Prozesse – auf eine unsichtbare, doch wertvolle Festigkeitsschicht, die Material aus verschiedenen Zeiten verbindet, Steinbrocken und Erdschichten zusammenhält, Landschaften stabilisiert und vor Erosion schützt. In der Arbeit treffen sich Erdgeschichte und Gegenwart und verweisen auf die Auflösung des Permafrosts im sich erwärmenden Klima sowie auf die dadurch bedingte Zerstörung beziehungsweise den Wandel der Lebensgrundlagen der bisherigen Fauna, Flora ... und unserer Zivilisation.

THE SILENT WHITE
This glass sculpture with inclusions of stone, sand, and the remains of plants from Piz Languard resembles a lump of ice from the realm of permafrost. Placed in a lane in Laret, it looks as if it had just now tumbled down off the mountain. Depending on the fall of light, it gleams either blue or gray or changing shades of white. Here and there it can be peered into, affording us a glimpse of secret places and processes, of an invisible, but precious, solid layer. Combining rock and earth from different eras, that layer lends stability to whole landscapes, protecting them against erosion. The work thus tells of both geological history and the present and serves as a timely reminder of the impact of our warming climate on permafrost and on the flora and fauna it sustains.

Die PVC-Blache einer Werbefläche im Parkhaus Rondo in Pontresina wird umgedreht. Werbeflächen sind auf Sichtbarkeit und Aufmerksamkeit ausgerichtet, aber während der Ausstellungsdauer verkehrt sich dieses Prinzip ins Gegenteil und die Fläche wird in einen ruhigen Zustand versetzt. Die bedruckte Seite verschwindet nach innen; sichtbar bleibt die unbedruckte Rückseite als homogene, helle Oberfläche. Der Eingriff beschränkt sich auf diese Umkehrung. Es werden keine weiteren Elemente hinzugefügt.
Die Fläche verbleibt in ihrer technischen Funktion, entzieht sich jedoch ihrer bildgebenden Aufgabe. Sie zeigt keinen Inhalt, sondern ihre Ausrichtung. Im Kontext des Parkhauses erscheint die Arbeit als umgekehrte Werbefläche ohne kommerzielle Botschaft, deren Bild auf die Materialoberflä-
che zurückgeführt wird.

The PVC tarpaulin covering an advertising space in the Rondo car park in Pontresina is turned over. Advertising spaces are designed to be visible and to attract attention, but for the duration of the exhibition this principle is reversed and the space is transformed into a tranquil state. The printed side disappears into the interior; what remains visible is the unprinted reverse side, a homogeneous, clear surface. The intervention consists solely of this reversal. No further elements are added. The surface retains its technical function but is stripped of its visual role. It displays not content, but its orientation. In the context of the car park, the work appears as a reversed advertising space without a commercial message, its image reduced to the material surface.

Diese Skulptur entwickelt sich als vertikale Sequenz von Elementen, die von einem geschlossenen, tragenden Zustand in zunehmend offene und instabile Formen übergehen. Die Arbeit besteht aus einer Struktur aus Holz, aufgebaut aus Schindeln und lamellierten Trägerelementen. Von unten nach oben verändern sich die Dichte und Integrität der Form: Geschlossene Volumen lösen sich auf, werden durchlässig, fragmentarisch und verlieren ihre Stabilität. Die Skulptur ist bewusst nicht als abgeschlossenes Objekt konzipiert. Während der gesamten Ausstellungsdauer bleibt sie der Witterung ausgesetzt. Feuchtigkeit, Temperatur und Zeit greifen in das Material ein und führen die angelegte Transformation weiter. Sichtbar wird ein Körper, der sich nicht behauptet, sondern verändert. Auflösung erscheint dabei nicht als Ende, sondern als Zustand, der im Material selbst angelegt ist.

stages of dissolution
This sculpture comprises a vertical sequence of elements that evolve from a closed, solid state to increasingly frayed and fragile forms. Built entirely of wood, it combines both shingles and glulam. These materials allow the density and integrity of the forms to change, so that the self-contained volumes at the bottom become ever more permeable and fragmentary towards the top. The decision not to make this sculpture a self-contained object was made for a reason. Since it will be exposed to the elements for the full duration of the exhibition, moisture, temperature, and time will inevitably eat away at the material, ushering in the desired transformation. The remaining corpus will be more about mutability than assertion, dissolution being less an objective than a state intrinsic to the material.

ARVENZEIT – Die Bäume warten darauf, dass man sie liest
Um das Jahr 1200 bedeutete «in der Natur lesen» die Zeichen Gottes zu erkennen. Diese Arve mag 900 oder 1400 Jahre alt sein, man weiss es nicht genau. Doch was man daraus folgern kann, dass ihr Keim lange vor Leonardo da Vinci oder Jürg Jenatsch zu wachsen begann, vielleicht um das Jahr 1200. In der Luftlinie in Blickrichtung des Piz Rosatsch steht sie in exakt 1,87 Km Distanz am Muottas da Schlarigna, 2200 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel, als ob ein Brennglas die Protagonistin aus dem God Plazzers herauslösen würde. Das Auge des Betrachters wird von der gigantischen Form herausgefordert: Durch was für einen kolossalen Längsschnitt durch alle Zeitgeister und Klimaschwankungen der Jahrhunderte schaut sie auf uns herab? Francis Ponges Aufforderung die Natur mit vertiefter Wertschätzung zu betrachten und zu verstehen versuchen, kondensiert in seinem Werk «Im Namen der Dinge – Fauna und Flora»: Die Bäume warten darauf, dass man sie liest. (Le parti pris de choses, Librairie Gallimard,1942).

ARVENZEIT – The trees are waiting to be read
Around 1200, «reading nature» meant being able to detect signs sent by God. This Swiss stone pine could be 900 or even 1400 years old; no one knows exactly. What can be concluded with some certainty is that it germinated and began growing long before Leonardo da Vinci or Jürg Jenatsch, possibly around 1200. Looking towards Piz Rosatsch, it stands exactly 1.87 km away from Muottas da Schlarigna, at 2200 m above sea level—as if a burning glass had detached it from the God Plazzer. Its gigantic shape challenges the eye of the beholder: What a colossal longitudinal section of historical periods and climate fluctuations it has witnessed! Francis Ponge, in his Le parti pris de choses (Librairie Gallimard 1942, translated into English by Lee Fahnestock as The Nature of Things), has a whole chapter on «Fauna and Flora» in which he calls on us to be more appreciative and understanding of nature. The trees, he writes, are waiting to be read.

Diese Installation entstand im Nachdenken über Lucio Fontanas revolutionäre Malereien aus den 1960er Jahren Spatial Concept: grundierte Leinwände, verletzt durch vertikale Schnitte. In Pontresina wird ein mehrfach geschlitztes Bild zur Fahne, welche Christoph Draeger unter die Brücke der Via Maistra hängt.
Die weisse Fahne gilt im Krieg als Symbol der Kapitulation oder als Friedensangebot. Im Kontext der Ausstellung zwischen Bachbett und Betonbrücke bezeichnet diese weisse Flagge ein Angebot an die Natur, dass wir uns ergeben, Frieden schliessen wollen: eine Utopie, die der Künstler mit vielen, aber viel zu wenigen, teilt. Die Arbeit schliesst sich an die Installation La Réproduction Interdite an, welche vor dem Hotel Kronenhof für die Vias d’art anno 2020 entstanden ist: Damals hatte ein Bild von René Magritte eine Neuinterpretation erfahren.

This installation grew out of reflections on Lucio Fontana’s revolutionary Spatial Concept paintings of the 1960s, which the artist created by first priming his canvases and then endowing them with long vertical slits. The flag that Christoph Draeger hangs below the bridge on the Via Maistra in Pontresina is also a painting that has been slashed multiple times.
In times of war, a white flag signals capitulation or at least a readiness to sue for peace. Installed as part of an exhibition between a riverbed and a concrete bridge, however, it symbolizes something slightly different: a readiness to surrender to, or at least make peace with, nature, which is a utopian vision that the artist shares with many, though still too few.
The work builds on the installation La Réproduction Interdite erected in front of the Hotel Kronenhof for the 2020 Vias d’art. That piece was also a reinterpretation, albeit of a painting by René Magritte.

Pontresina ist seit dem 19. Jahrhundert vom Alpinismus geprägt. Britische Bergsteiger kamen hierher, um Erstbesteigungen zu wagen. Bis heute formt diese Geschichte den Ort. Die Arbeit greift das Thema Klettern auf und stellt das Seil ins Zentrum – als Mittel der Sicherung, der Verbindung und als wesentliches Werkzeug des Auf- und Abstiegs. Zugleich besitzt es eine eigene Qualität: Es schwingt, bewegt sich und beschreibt Linien im Raum. Aus einem realen Kletterseil entstehen zweidimensionale Objekte. Das flexible Material wird in flache Formen aus Chromstahl überführt. So erscheint das Seil verfremdet – seine Bewegung ist eingefroren, seine Funktion aufgehoben. Die spiegelnde Oberfläche reflektiert die Umgebung und bindet sie visuell ein. Die Objekte sind zu sehen an der Pforte des Museums Alpin sowie unter dem Bogen 1 bei der Eiskletterschlucht, Via da Mulin.

SeilTanz
Pontresina has been a hotspot for alpinists since the nineteenth century. It was especially popular with British mountaineers eager to «bag» new peaks. That history continues to shape it to this day. This work takes up the theme of climbing by centering on rope: rope as a means of securing ourselves, rope as a connection, and rope as an essential tool for both ascents and descents. As a material, rope possesses a quality all its own in that it can move and make waves and trace lines in space. Here in this work, a real climber’s rope has been transformed into two-dimensional objects and the pliable material then translated into flat forms made of chromium steel. Thus the rope has been alienated, its movement frozen, its functionality suspended. The shiny surface of the objects, moreover, reflects their environs, visually incorporating them into the work. One is positioned at the entrance to the Museum Alpin and the other underneath Arch No. 1 of the ice-climbing gorge, Via da Mulin.

Outdoor-Abenteuer sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil des touristischen Angebots im Engadin: Berg- und Eisklettern, Skitouren, Freeriden, Canyoning und River Rafting verlocken dazu, die eigenen Grenzen auszutesten. Dieser Nervenkitzel birgt jedoch auch Risiken: Jedes Jahr kommen Skifahrer und Snowboarder in Lawinen ums Leben, auch in der Schweiz ereigneten sich bereits tödliche Canyoning-Unfälle und auch beim River Rafting waren schon Todesopfer zu beklagen. Ein tragisches Unglück ereignete sich 1993 auf dem Inn bei Scuol, bei dem neun Menschen ums Leben kamen. Die Ova da Bernina, die Pontresinas Schlucht durchquert, mündet in den Flaz und wenige Kilometer flussabwärts in den Inn. Vom Aussichtspunkt aus betrachtet wirkt das Boot beinahe so, als würde es in dem 50 Meter tiefer liegenden Fluss treiben. Wie ein Geisterschiff schwebt es über dem Abgrund und erzeugt dabei ein surreales Gefühl der Instabilität.

Outdoor adventures are an important part of the Engadine’s tourist offering. Mountaineering, ice climbing, freeriding, ski touring, canyoning, and river rafting are all ways of testing our own limits. Such thrills are not without risks, however. Sadly, not a year goes by without skiers and snowboarders being killed by avalanches, and there have been fatalities in both canyoning and river rafting, too. One exceptionally tragic accident on the River Inn near Scuol in 1993 claimed nine lives. The Ova da Bernina that bisects the Pontresina Gorge, joins the Flaz and, a few kilometres downstream, the Inn. Seen from the viewing platform projecting out over it, the boat seems to be drifting down the Flaz 50 m below. In fact, it is floating like a ghost ship in midair, generating a surreal feeling of instability.

Via Planeta Rosa
Jules Spinatsch hat seine Motive in der unmittelbaren Umgebung seiner beiden Ausstellungsorte gefunden, entlang oder nahe der Via Maistra. Eine unscheinbare Nische beim Hotel Müller täuscht eine Einfahrt in den rot beleuchteten Innenhof des Hotels vor. Die Vitrine daneben eröffnet einen zusätzlichen Seitenblick als unmittelbares Déjà-vu auf die Kreuzung mit der lichtspendenden Ampel an derselben Strasse. Planeta Rosa aber strahlt aus einer weiteren, externen Sphäre zu uns.
Ob auf geistiger, körperlicher oder politischer Ebene – Spinatsch lässt uns bewusst im Dunkeln. Suggeriert er vielleicht einen Rotlichtbezirk im Hinterhof? Oder schlägt er vor, den Platz Rosa Luxemburg zu widmen?

Via Planeta Rosa
Jules Spinatsch found his motifs in the immediate vicinity of the two exhibition locations along or near the Via Maistra. In an inconspicuous niche in the façade of the Hotel Müller he has created the illusion of a gateway giving onto a hotel courtyard bathed in red light. The display case next to it opens up a lateral view—an immediate déjà-vu, as it were—of the nearby intersection, whose traffic lights are the source of the red light. Planeta Rosa, however, beams out at us from another, external sphere. Whether at the intellectual, physical, or political level, Spinatsch deliberately leaves us in the dark. Is he implying the existence of a red-light district out back? Or is he proposing that the square be dedicated to Rosa Luxemburg?

Pontresina ist seit dem 19. Jahrhundert vom Alpinismus geprägt. Britische Bergsteiger kamen hierher, um Erstbesteigungen zu wagen. Bis heute formt diese Geschichte den Ort. Die Arbeit greift das Thema Klettern auf und stellt das Seil ins Zentrum – als Mittel der Sicherung, der Verbindung und als wesentliches Werkzeug des Auf- und Abstiegs. Zugleich besitzt es eine eigene Qualität: Es schwingt, bewegt sich und beschreibt Linien im Raum. Aus einem realen Kletterseil entstehen zweidimensionale Objekte. Das flexible Material wird in flache Formen aus Chromstahl überführt. So erscheint das Seil verfremdet – seine Bewegung ist eingefroren, seine Funktion aufgehoben. Die spiegelnde Oberfläche reflektiert die Umgebung und bindet sie visuell ein. Die Objekte sind zu sehen an der Pforte des Museums Alpin sowie unter dem Bogen 1 bei der Eiskletterschlucht, Via da Mulin.

Pontresina has been a hotspot for alpinists since the nineteenth century. It was especially popular with British mountaineers eager to «bag» new peaks. That history continues to shape it to this day. This work takes up the theme of climbing by centering on rope: rope as a means of securing ourselves, rope as a connection, and rope as an essential tool for both ascents and descents. As a material, rope possesses a quality all its own in that it can move and make waves and trace lines in space. Here in this work, a real climber’s rope has been transformed into two-dimensional objects and the pliable material then translated into flat forms made of chromium steel. Thus the rope has been alienated, its movement frozen, its functionality suspended. The shiny surface of the objects, moreover, reflects their environs, visually incorporating them into the work. One is positioned at the entrance to the Museum Alpin and the other underneath Arch No. 1 of the ice-climbing gorge, Via da Mulin.

Solaris
Das Hotel Engadinerhof empfängt uns mit einer grossen Vitrine, die nicht mehr Angebote und Ansichten des Hotels zeigt. Das Triptychon Solaris darin preist die Sonne, zeigt Erscheinungen des Lichts. Nicht an der
Landschaft und der Luft unter dem Himmel, sondern Lichteffekte an der von Menschen gestalteten Umwelt – an Strassen, Architektur und Automobilen.
Spinatsch konfrontiert uns mit einem spontanen Déjà-vu, einer Erinnerung an die Arbeit beim Hotel Müller, denn auch hier sehen wir Reflexionen, Abstrahlungen eines verdoppelten Diesseits. Solaris heisst Andrei
Tarkowskis düstere Verfilmung von Stanislaw Lems gleichnamigem Roman, in dem Astronauten im All unerwartet auf Kopien ihrer selbst treffen.

Solaris
The Hotel Engadinerhhof welcomes us with a large display case, which in a break with past practice does not contain views and offers of the hotel. What it does feature is a triptych titled Solaris that hails the sun and three different light phenomena. Showcased here, however, is not the light that illuminates the landscape and the ether but the incident light on manmade environments—on streets, architecture, automobiles.
Thus Spinatsch confronts us with a spontaneous flashback to the work at the Hotel Müller, where most of what we see likewise consists of reflections—that is, the light of a duplicated world thrown back at us. Solaris is also the name of Andrei Tarkovski’s brooding film adaptation of Stanislav Lem’s eponymous novel, in which astronauts traveling through space unexpectedly run into replicas of themselves.
